Australian Open 2026 Men’s Singles Draw: Biggest Winner and Loser Ft. Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev

The Australian Open draw has finally been announced, and there are some interesting matches on the cards in the men’s singles discipline. World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and his biggest rival on the circuit, Jannik Sinner, are touted to be the favorites to battle it out for the title at the end of two weeks in Melbourne Park.

But there could be some surprises on the way as we aim to explore the biggest winners and losers in the men’s singles draw. There have been some interesting runs in the qualifiers, which ended on Thursday, and these unseeded players will be hopeful of springing a surprise early on in the draw.

Sinner hopes to win his third straight title at Melbourne Park. Alcaraz is chasing a career Grand Slam by winning in Australia this year. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic, already a 24-time Grand Slam champion, will attempt to make history by seeking his 11th Australian Open title, which would bring his total to 25 Grand Slams and secure his legacy in tennis.

Biggest Losers: Alexander Zverev and Alex de Minaur Have Difficult Draws

Among the top seeds, World No. 3 Alexander Zverev and the home favorite Alex de Minaur have difficult draws leading up to the semifinals of the Grand Slam. The German, alongside Minaur, is placed in the top half of the draw.

Zverev begins his journey with a round 1 match against Canada’s Gabriel Diallo, while Minaur will face former top-10 seed Matteo Berrettini in the first round. Early on in the competition, Zverev could lock horns with Francisco Cerundolo or Andrey Rublev, while he could potentially face Felix Auger-Aliassime or Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals.

As for de Minaur, he could face Frances Tiafoe in the third round, No. 10 seed Alexander Bublik in the fourth, and Alcaraz in the quarterfinals, which will not make it smooth sailing for the Aussie to reach the semifinals of the Grand Slam. Zverev could then be facing Alcaraz in the semis and potentially either Sinner or Djokovic in the finals.

Biggest Winners: Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton Have Relatively Easier Draws

Australian Open remains the only Grand Slam title missing from the trophy cabinet of the star Spaniard, alongside the ATP Finals title. Currently, Alcaraz appears to have a relatively easier draw and is expected to breeze past his opponents up to the quarterfinals. It is in that round that his first real challenge may emerge, possibly from either de Minaur or Bublik.
If Alcaraz manages to overcome the quarterfinal hurdle at Melbourne Park, he could then meet Zverev, Medvedev, Auger-Aliassime, or Rublev in the semifinals. Should he reach the final, his possible opponents include Djokovic, Sinner, Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz, or Lorenzo Musetti.
As for the No. 8 seed, Shelton has it relatively easy till the fourth round, where he could potentially face Casper Ruud, but the real test of mettle comes in the quarterfinal, where he could face the defending champion, Sinner, and from that point on, it will be a test for the 23-year-old American.
Alcaraz will face Adam Walton in round 1, while Shelton will face Ugo Humbert in the first round on the opening day of the main draw.
