Jannik Sinner cheekily opened up about his superstitions during a locker-room tour, as he prepares to defend his Australian Open title.
Sinner arrives at the season’s first Grand Slam as a two-time defending champion, having defeated Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev in the 2023 and 2024 finals, respectively. He landed in Australia earlier this week and took part in the One Point Slam exhibition on Wednesday, where he was beaten in his second match by eventual champion Jordan Smith.
Sinner recently gave the Australian Open media a tour of the locker room. He revealed his preferred spot to sit during the event and added that all the players have a fixed place by choice.
“I’ve always been here. Everyone is kind of here, Carlos is here, Sascha is here, Novak is always here, so this is a corner we all like. But also because it’s close to the shower, it’s convenient for many things,” Sinner said. (1:40)
Sinner admitted he is somewhat superstitious, though he also credits consistency and results for sticking with what works.
“In these kinds of things, I’m a bit superstitious,” he added. “At Wimbledon, I changed a couple of things, and at the US Open at the beginning as well. When I see certain things don’t work for a couple of years, then I try to change. But here, I won’t change, because, you know, winning twice here.”
Jannik Sinner Savors Return To Melbourne As Australian Open Title Defense Looms
Reflecting on his return to Melbourne during his locker room tour, Sinner spoke warmly about Melbourne while acknowledging the fresh challenge each season brings.
“It feels great. It’s a special place. Many great things happened. But every year is different, every time you come here it is the start of a new season, so were’re looking forward to it,” Sinner said.
The Italian was also seen sharing a light-hearted moment with Hubert Hurkacz in the video, with the Pole complimenting Sinner on his fitness.
“You look fit, you look sick,” Hurkacz said.
“I don’t know if it’s good or bad. I would like to build some muscles,” Sinner replied.
The Australian Open draw is scheduled to be released on Thursday, January 15, with main-draw action set to begin on Sunday, January 18.
