Andre Agassi Makes Feelings Crystal Clear On Current Gen Players Showing ‘Rebellious’ Side Like Him & Why It Has Become Harder

Former ATP star Andre Agassi was different from others in the way he used to bring himself to court back in the day. Agassi was known for wearing extravagant outfits, complete with long hair and earrings.

This was Agassi’s way to show his “rebellious” side. However, he credits today’s generation for even daring such a thing, given the enormous repercussions that can happen on social media.

“I definitely had a rebellious side, and I found ways to express it through my clothes and, let’s say, my accessories!” Agassi said to local media in Brazil. “It was a different time… Just imagining what it would be like to manage social media today gives me goosebumps. That’s why I have a lot of compassion and empathy for today’s players. I also think they represent their sport and themselves very well.”

Not many players in today’s age, especially on the men’s side gives the same kind of uniqueness that Agassi used to with his outfits and accessories. Agassi said this while presenting the trophy to the winner of the ATP 500 in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday.

Andre Agassi Gives Credit to Marta Safin for Revolutionizing Tennis

Andre Agassi spoke at length when talking about evolution in tennis since his playing days were over. He mentions advancements in training, sports equipment and science while comparing this generation to the older one, when it was easy to find weakness in an opponent.

“There’s no doubt that tennis has evolved, but so have all sports. Advances in training, sports science, and equipment have accelerated this process,” Agassi told local media in Brazil. “When I started out, players generally had well-defined profiles, with obvious strengths and weaknesses; you knew you could easily find a weakness in your opponent. There were taller, more aggressive players, but they generally lacked mobility. Some were good hitters, agile and mobile, but lacked power and/or the ability to easily win points on serve.”

Agassi specifically mentioned Marat Safin, who played a hand in revolutionizing the game.

“Players like Marat Safin somewhat revolutionized the game when they emerged: capable of wreaking havoc on both sides of the court from their very first shot, they also possessed excellent mobility,” Agassi added. “This phenomenon is now more common. Moreover, thanks to all the resources available, especially for the top players, the support and teams surrounding them have allowed them to fully exploit their physical and technical potential. This translates into much longer careers.”

Agassi likes what tennis has to offer this days, with the likes of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz leading the tour in terms of skills, level and hard work.
