Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns have secured the commitment of five-star recruit John Meredith III, who is the fourth-best prospect in the Class of 2027. He’s also considered the top cornerback and Texan recruit in his class.
To get him, the Longhorns beat Alabama, fellow in-state school Texas A&M, Arizona State, and Arkansas. The Aggies, in particular, were the frontrunners to land John Meridith.
Texas fans immediately took to X to celebrate the surprising news, although they admitted that they’re yet to catch up to Texas A&M’s recruitment drive.
“Scared of the comp within this A&M recruiting class, go get your pt kid,” wrote one fan.
“This is a great pickup by Stark. Atm has great class so we are still behind them unfortunately. 🤘🏾,” explained another.
Other fans weren’t as surprised by John Meredith’s decision.
“It was a forgone conclusion he was going there not really chosen over,” claimed one fan.
However, some fans weren’t convinced by the move.
“They really paid this guy 5 million and he’s 180 pounds 😭😭😭😭,” lamented one person.
Others mocked Meredith’s choice of Texas over Texas A&M and Alabama.
“Guess he wants to play in the cheez it bowl every year 🤣🤣🤣🤣,” joked one fan.
“Welcome to Texass young man. Home of underachieving,” wrote one person in a clearly ironic tone.
One fan had an explanation of why Meredith chose Austin over College Station: he will get an easier route to becoming a starter.
“Great player! Wish A&M could snag him, but the early playing time at tu probably sold him! Would have to wait his turn with this elite Aggie secondary coming back. Can’t hate on his decision though, hopefully they can develop, although that’s been proven to be difficult at the 40 acres,” explained one fan.
Steve Sarkisian expresses concerns about top-heavy nonconference games in 2026
In an appearance on Wednesday’s edition of the ‘Triple Option Podcast’ with Urban Meyer, Mark Ingram, and Rob Stone, Steve Sarkisian opened up about his biggest worry of the upcoming season: the heavy preseason-ranked encounters the Longhorns have in 2026.
“I looked at our schedule. I think we’re playing eight or nine preseason top 25 teams. And it really went to last year, where we played five top 10-ranked teams in the regular season,” Sarkisian said. “We won three of those games. We were the first team to do that since LSU in 2019 with Joe Burrow. We’re playing Ohio State out of conference. And so those games get challenging.”
Despite said achievement, the Longhorns had a disappointing season, missing the College Football Playoff.
