“Don’t be a Prick”: Shane Beamer Holds Nothing Back While Stating Gamecocks’ Recruiting Criteria

South Carolina Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer was blunt about the recruiting criteria of his program and the players who focus on money.

On Wednesday, Beamer was featured in a video uploaded by sports reporter Trey Wallace on X/Twitter. The tenured tactician was captured during his media availability in the college football offseason.

Beamer was asked about the recruitment schemes his program deploys. Beamer said he understands that money is important in the sport, but players and even his recruiters don’t have to be so pushy about it, according to him.

“ There’s, people always talk about, you know, money’s not, you know, money doesn’t matter. Money matters, and I understand that. But if it’s the only reason that you’re really choosing to come to a school, this probably ain’t the place for you. So, don’t be a prick and have things that you wanna come to Carolina for other than just who’s gonna give you the most money or any school. And I would think most coaches would probably say that,” Beamer said. (0:42)

Beamer is coming off a 2025 collegiate football campaign, in which he and his South Carolina-based program finished with an overall record of 4-8 (1-7 SEC), and were the No. 13 overall seed in the SEC standings. The Gamecocks were unable to make it to the college football playoff and had no postseason action of any kind.

Shane Beamer Tells Incoming Players That If Money Is Their Primary Focus, Don’t Come To His Program

During the same media availability, Shane Beamer made it crystal clear that if any player or recruit comes to his program, or even just shows interest, but money is their driving factor, they should not come at all.

While Beamer did affirm that he understands how big a factor money is, he believes that if that’s what drives a player, they will just ask for more at the end of a season.

“If I ask you what’s important to you and what are you looking for in a school, and you tell me whoever’s gonna give me the most money, which I’ve had players tell me that. Probably not the best way to endear yourself to me, wanting to bring you into this program. Not that money’s not an aspect. It is. I get it. But if it’s the reason you’re choosing to come to Carolina,” Beamer shared. (0:05)

“Don’t come, because a year from now, or six months from now, whenever the portal’s open again, you’re gonna be in my office again for seeing who’s gonna give you the most money,” he continued.
