“Hug My Phone More Than I Hug My Wife”: Shane Beamer’s Assistant Coach Shares Hilarious Remark On South Carolina’s Intense Mentality

In large football programs like South Carolina, coaching can be a daunting task, even for assistant coaches. Shane Beamer’s squad wants to win and it demands dedication to the team. This is shown during a new snippet from Netflix’s “SEC Football: Any Given Saturday” as one Gamecocks assistant noted that they are up as early as 1:00 AM and are spending more time for their team than their families.

“Well there is no such thing as a nine to five around here, I mean you can just get that. I’m working at two in the morning and I am getting a call from Beamer at 1:00 in the morning and saying, ‘coach, I gotta tell you something,'” he said. “I’m joking and tell my guys that my phone’s right next to my bed and my wife on one side and my phone is on the other. So I hug my phone more than I hug my wife.”

“SEC Football: Any Given Saturday” is now streaming on Netflix and it follows several teams as they get ready for the upcoming 2025 season. South Carolina and Vanderbilt are two of the more prominently featured teams, though some of the conference’s giants, such as Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Ole Miss, Missouri, and Oklahoma, refused Netflix access to film as they trained.

LSU’s Brian Kelly, South Carolina’s Shane Beamer, and Texas A&M’s Mike Elko are often prominently featured in various posters and trailers for the show, as is some of the biggest names in the SEC, such as South Carolina’s LaNorris Sellers and LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier.

South Carolina Gamecocks Branded As ‘Up and Comers’ For Netflix Documentary About SEC

The Netflix documentary series about the SEC will not just focus on the favorites like LSU, Tennessee and Florida, but also the underdogs like Arkansas, Auburn, Kentucky, Mississippi State, and Vanderbilt. However, there are also the up and comers who are seen to be challenging the status quo in the conference.

In the documentary series, South Carolina is seen not as an underdog like before, but as one of the up and comers that can give some of the bigger programs like Texas, LSU and Georgia a run for their money, especially with quarterback LaNorris Sellers being regarded as one of the best quarterbacks in a conference that also includes Arch Manning.

The Gamecocks are still inconsistent and lack experience, but the program is presented as having the tools that could challenge the giants seriously.
