Lane Kiffin might have left the team, but his former assistant, Pete Golding, has been doing a good job on the recruiting front for Ole Miss so far. The new head coach just scored his latest recruiting win with four-star safety Darrell Mattison from Morgan Park High School in Chicago, Illinois. He previously committed for Michigan but reopened his recruitment and flipped to Ole Miss instead.
Mattison is ranked the No. 344 overall from the Class of 2027, with him also being the No. 32 safety in the country and the No. 15 player from Illinois. He used to play as a wide receiver but has found his calling on defense as a safety. He has been described as very athletic and a very good tackler, though he does need to put on some weight and get stronger physically.
Pete Golding beat out Indiana, Penn State, Northwestern and Nebraska to get Mattison, who had only officially visited Ole Miss among the other schools vying for him. He visited Oxford once but had visited Michigan twice before, though he had since decommitted from the Wolverines program.
The Rebels will once again be led by Trinidad Chambliss this season after the quarterback won his case against the NCAA, getting another year of eligibility after successfully arguing that he missed one season due to injury. This would be his sixth year of eligibility and he is looking to improve Ole Miss’ performance during the CFP this year.
