The Iowa wrestling team have recently released their ‘We Hate You Too’ T-shirts which has garnered reactions from wrestler Yianni Diakomihalis and the fans. They highlighted the university’s self-critcisizing behaviour.
The Iowa wrestling team recently competed at the NCAA Wrestling Championships 2026, where they ended up in the fourth position after securing an overall of 92.5 team points. In their appearance this year, they maintained their 35-year streak of having at least one wrestler in the finals.
Shortly after concluding their campaign, the Iowa Hawkeyes launched a t-shirt with the slogan, ‘It’s Okay. We Hate You Too.’ In 1984-85, the wrestling team was led by Dan Gable, who designed a poster that read, ‘Everyone Loves to Hate Iowa Wrestling.’ Bringing back this trend, they have now created the new t-shirt with a response to their rivals.
This caught the attention of the Cornell’s wrestler, Diakomihalis, who roasted this idea by responding on X:
“Iowa having shirts that say “it’s ok we hate you too” is very funny.”
Replying to this with a comment, one of the fans trolled the university, writing:
“Atleast they’re embracing how much they’re hated lol.”
Another fan expressed their dismay over the new launch, sharing a lengthy tweet that read:
“God I hate this for the school. Why do we keep thinking it’s cool to self ostracize from the community. This is anti social behavior, wish some would evolve. Also, be one thing if they won all the titles but they are consistently 3rd or 4th and 100 points out of first, weird to pull these out. Lastly, how is this helping pull in fans or recruits and their families??? This may be the most important issue right now.”
Along similar lines, another user chimed in:
““Why do we keep thinking it’s cool to self ostracize from the community. This is anti social behavior, wish some would evolve” Hahaha – The irony of this sentence is incredible based on your tweets.”
Iowa wrestling team’s coach Tom Brands opened up about his thoughts on the haters
After wrapping up the NCAA Wrestling Championships, Iowa wrestling team’s coach, Tom Brands, spoke to the media in the post-meet press conference, where he was asked about his thoughts on the haters who still think that he doesn’t have it in him to get the job done for the team. Responding to this, he said:
“You control what you can control. And we work every day at making this place better. And I give credit to our roster. I give credit to the guys that were in this tournament. I give credit to the 10 guys that went to the Big 10 championships. We had some uh where we were switching guys in and out in a couple different weights. And I give credit to the guys that weren’t in the lineup going to the Big 10 Championships,” said Iowa team’s coach.
