“RIP”- Wrestling World Mourns Legendary Coach Who Led Minnesota to Multiple NCAA Titles

The wrestling world recently lost Jay Robinson, the legendary coach and former Greco-Roman wrestler, who was credited with leveling up Minnesota’s wrestling game to great heights.

On March 29, it was confirmed that Robinson had died at 79. The cause of death has not been revealed yet; however, fans and the wrestling community from around the world have already started paying homage to the legendary Gopher.

Many from the wrestling world cited his longtime association with Olympic legend Dan Gable, his long career as a coach, and also how much the Gopher has given back to the sport.

Aaron La Farge took to his social media and said:

“J. Rob helped Dan Gable kick off a dynasty so many good wrestlers and coaches in this picture.”

Regarding his community outreach, a fan wrote:

“Damn, that hits hard. About 15 years ago or so ago my buddy and I hosted a little nothing wrestling camp. We reached out to a few folks, and coach Robinson was one and he graciously came and held court with our small cadre. It was awesome. God speed coach.”

An outlet also commented: “RIP to a legend.”

Many others also gave condolences and highlighted Robinson’s key moments in his legendary career as a wrestler and a coach.

Robinson contributed immensely to the wrestling world and served as the head coach for the Gophers back in 1986 and produced multiple NCAA champions, especially during 2001 & 2002 when they won back-to-back.

When Dan Gable Highlighted Jay Robinson’s Contributions

Wrestling legend Dan Gable once spoke about how immensely Robinson was involved in shaping the Minnesota wrestling program. Speaking in a documentary about Robinson’s life, Gable highlighted the “individuality” aspect that Robinson brought in that really helped the athletes feel like there was somebody who would listen.

“What Jay really bought once I became the head coach, he bought that one on one individual aspect that was needed. He was called Captain Robinson, sure had something to do with the military, who usually bark orders, but the guys like it,” he said.

Robinson was a Vietnam veteran who had served as an Army Ranger. He was also part of the 1972 American Greco-Roman Olympic Team that participated in the Munich Olympics.
