Tara Davis-Woodhall suffered her first long jump defeat in three years at the USATF Outdoor Championships on Sunday at the Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island in New York City.
Davis-Woodhall initially appeared to have secured her fourth straight national title after producing a final-round jump of 7.16m. The mark was recorded, and she celebrated what seemed to be another gold medal. However, shortly after the event, an official protest was lodged over her final takeoff.
Following a video review, officials ruled that the tip of her shoe had marginally crossed the takeoff line, resulting in a foul that invalidated the jump. Davis-Woodhall’s team challenged the decision, but the jury upheld the ruling, leaving her best legal mark at 6.90m.
As a result, Alyssa Jones claimed the gold medal with a jump of 6.96m, while Monae’ Nichols took silver with 6.92m. Tara Davis-Woodhall claimed the third position with the 6.90m mark.
Her loss at the 2026 USATF Outdoor Championships marked her first competitive loss in the event since the 2023 World Championships.
Tara Davis-Woodhall weighed in on her first long jump loss in three years
After finishing third behind Alyssa Jones and Monae Nicols in the long jump at the USATF Outdoor Championships, Tara Davis-Woodhall addressed the media, where she reflected on her performance and spoke about her mental health. Weighing in on her hard work and the support she received from her team, she said:
“I got that dog in me, so that’s it. I train hard for a reason. I build my confidence at practice. You guys see a lot of confidence on the runway, but that’s built behind the scenes. It’s built with my team, it’s built with my support, it’s built at practice. So, I’m just glad that all of my hard work and my, my therapy and my mental work has paid off.”
Talking about her season, she added:
“I have no idea what this season holds. I know I have ultimate championships in Athens. So in between August, I hope I get to, go back to the drawing board and figure it all out. But, super dope that I am, gonna be over here.
Tara Davis-Woodhall is expected to compete next at the World Athletics Ultimate Championships, which is scheduled to take place in September in Budapest, Hungary.
