Spencer Lee Reacts As Bobby Telford Bids Goodbye To Iowa Hawkeyes Wrestling

Olympic silver medalist Spencer Lee expressed gratitude for the now-former assistant coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Bobby Telford. The Olympian reacted to the news just hours after Telford had announced his departure.

Bobby Telford has recently announced via his social media that he has taken up a new position with the medical firm Stryker as a sales representative for Eastern Iowa Neurosurgical. He was paid homage by his peers and fans and also by the Iowa Hawkeyes Association.

Spencer Lee took to his social media and posted a photo of Telford with an overlay of the words “Thank you.” Below that, Lee referenced the Iowa Hawkeye Wrestling team, of which both of them were part, and beside it, carved, “Thank you, Bobby,” with a handshake emoji that symbolized respect.

Lee himself is a three-time NCAA champion, winning each of those back in 2018, 2019, and 2021, during Telford’s tenure as the assistant coach. Alongside this, Lee had also backed the Dan Hodge trophy twice.

Telford had also joined Iowa back in 2018 as a volunteer coach and has led the Hawkeyes to many victories. Both Lee and Telford have been a major part of the Hawkeyes’ wrestling club

Spencer Lee Talks about his Immense Love for the Hawkeyes’ Wrestling Club

Spencer Lee has time and again showcased his love for the Hawkeyes’ wrestling club through various outlets, even after his national title wins. During an interview at a wrestling fan fest, Lee spoke about his love for the Hawkeyes and how much the club has endured alongside his journey into the big realm and highlighted their support every time he felt short.

“They’ve been behind me my entire career, they believed in me even when I had fallen short of these goals and in all areas of life, even in state finals, you know, they belived in me going to college, and when I fell short of winning my fourth national title, they still believed in me to win the Olympic Gold, so we’re gonna stay and keep the good thing going,” he said (10:32).

Lee also mentioned how his current aim is to make it to the world team this year and possibly find a spot at the 2028 LA Olympics.
