“It’ll be Difficult Emotionally to Return to Russia”- AIN Athlete Adeliia Petrosian Breaks Silence On Future After Winter Olympics Fall

Adeliia Petrosian’s figure skating final round at the 2026 Winter Olympics didn’t go as planned, as she suffered a heartbreaking fall. She reflected on her performance, saying how difficult it would be for her to return to Russia.

Petrosian competed in the Games as an Individual Neutral Athlete (AIN) because of Russia’s ongoing suspension. She entered the finals on Thursday as one of the strongest medal contenders after a fifth-place finish in the qualifiers. However, her medal hopes were dashed after she failed to execute her specialty, the quadruple jumps.

With her plans to land two jumps, she fell on the first quad toe loop, ending her Olympic medal dream. After this, she did not attempt another quad, securing a sixth-place finish with 214.53 points overall. Addressing the fall, she said she was ashamed of how things turned out.

“Not doing a quad wasn’t an option. I didn’t really have a choice. It’ll be difficult emotionally to return to Russia. I feel ashamed about how things turned out for myself, the federation, my coaches, and the fans. But in terms of logistics, no, I think it’ll be okay. Competitions are well-organized at home, though I won’t have such a big arena crowd,” said Adeliia Petrosian.

The 18-year-old also weighed in on how the crowd supported her, adding:

“I heard everything they were shouting, how our Russian-speaking spectators supported me. Of course it’s pleasant.”

After the upset in the free skating segment of the figure skating finals, Adeliia Petrosian spoke to the media, fielding several questions surrounding the ins and outs of her performance at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

She was asked if her Olympics experience was positive overall. She didn’t shy away from calling it negative because of her free skate performance.

“Right now, after my free skate, I have mostly negative thoughts. I want to return to reality and move out of this state. Maybe I’ll find some positives and learn something from it in time,” said Adellia Petrosian.

The Russian was also asked if anything in her performance could have been done differently. To this, she said:

“I haven’t reviewed the program yet, and honestly, I don’t really want to. It doesn’t matter anymore. I just need some time to breathe and process this stage before moving forward.”

Adeliia Petrosian added that she might not attend the closing ceremony of the event. Although she initially planned to go, she wasn’t sure anymore after her forgettable performance.
