Olympics’ Controversial Return of Sex Verification Testing for Women: Global Backlash Explained

The Olympic Committee is under heavy scrutiny over the potential introduction of genetic sex verification for all female athletes and a ban on transgender/intersex competitors. Over 100 organizations, including multiple human rights and sports advocacy organizations, have urged the IOC to scrap the plan for compulsory genetic sex testing.

The Sport & Rights Alliance (SRA), ILGA World, and Humans of Sport organizations have released a joint statement, criticizing the IOC’s Protection of the Female Category Working Group. Ioc last conducted the sex testing at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics after which it stopped the practice, citing it was scientifically and ethically unjustifiable. The test was an inaccurate test of both sex and athletic advantage, and also resulted in harm to the affected athletes.

The Sport & Rights Alliance, Humans of Sport organizations, and ILGA slammed the IOC’s proposed sex-testing and blanket ban policy, with the SRA’s Executive Director, Andrea Florence, saying that it is against fairness and dignity.

“A sex testing and blanket ban policy would be a catastrophic erosion of women’s rights and safety,” Florence said. “Gender policing and exclusion harm all women and girls, and undermine the very dignity and fairness the IOC claims to uphold. Our concerns are compounded by the fact that the IOC also seems to be, at the same time, divesting from the safe sport infrastructure that actually provides protection for women and girls.”

The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) World’s Executive Director, Julia Ehrt, also blasted the Olympic committee’s policy, saying it would develop stereotypes and increase harassment for LGBTI athletes.

“Sport should be a place of belonging,” Ehrt said. “We urge the IOC to prioritize safety over politics and not allow a policy that actively puts all women at risk. Invasive policing of women’s bodies should concern everyone as it reinforces harmful stereotypes and exposes all women and LGBTI athletes to further harassment and scrutiny.”

In 2021, the IOC allowed the individual federations to set rules on the participation of transgender athletes in their respective sports.

What Did the Humans of Sport Organization Say About the Olympic Committee’s Plan To Introduce Genetic Sex Verification?

Dr. Payoshni Mitra, Executive Director of Humans of Sport, opined that the Olympic Committee’s plan to introduce mandatory genetic sex verification for all female athletes is harmful and violates privacy. She added that it may lead to public humiliation and unnecessary medical procedures. She discussed its dangerous effects on children, suggesting it could damage their mental health and safety.

“Requiring women and girls to undergo mandatory genetic screening just to participate in sport would revive a practice that – even if it’s a ‘one-time test’ – violates women’s and girls’ privacy, exposes them to extreme public scrutiny, humiliation, and opens a pathway to medically unnecessary interventions,” Mitra said.

“People often forget that child athletes compete at the Olympics and international competitions – this policy would cause massive safeguarding risks by requiring young women and children’s bodies to be investigated and their intimate health information disclosed, potentially leading to permanent harm to their dignity, mental health, and safety,” she added.

The Olympic Committee has yet to make a final decision on the policy.
