Former Nebraska volleyball coach John Cook recently reflected on former player Merritt Beason’s arrival at the Omaha Supernovas. Cook was announced as the Co-Owner and General Manager of the Supernovas in August, months after he retired from coaching.
The legendary coach trained multiple teams for 32 years, including 25 at Nebraska. During his term with the Huskers, he led them to four national championships. He produced several elite players, including Lexi Rodriguez, Harper Murray, and Beason, who joined Omaha in the offseason.
In an interview with Hurrdat Sports, Cook opened up about signing Beason. He highlighted that the Supernovas had scouted her while she was competing for the Huskers. Cook persuaded her to join the Supernovas a year after she represented the Atlanta Vibe of the Pro Volleyball Federation.
“Personally I wanted to prove to [Merritt Beason] I told her don’t go to Atlanta. She said that, ‘Coach told me don’t go to Atlanta.’ At the time when I was still coaching her, and it was during the NCAA big tournament, Omaha Supernovas were trying to trade to get her to draft at No.1 at the Supernovas. So, they wanted her but I said ‘Hey, tell your agent Supernovas want you to work it and tell me you are not going to go to Atlanta because you ain’t a No.1 pick.'”
Beason spent the first two years of her collegiate career with Florida before joining the Huskers.
Former Nebraska Volleyball Coach John Cook Reveals The Reason For Joining The Omaha Supernovas Team
John Cook also opened up about his decision to take charge of the Omaha Supernovas. He said the key reason to join the team was to provide players with opportunities to lead them to success.
“This has been a pretty easy transition for me because this is similar to what I’ve been doing,” Cook said. “If you look at it, you’re just trying to put all this group together, give them everything they need to perform their best I mean that’s the bottom line. That’s my job is to give them every opportunity to be the best that they can become.”
“We wanted to create and built a team that the fans would recognize and relate to and I think that’s one of the reasons why people are so passionate about the Supernovas,” Cook said.
Merritt Beason and Leyla Blackwell are two former Nebraska Volleyball players now part of the Supernovas.
