Isaac Trumble recently opened up about his journey of being overlooked to becoming the NCAA wrestling champion with NC State. He won the title on March 21, 2026, at Rocket Arena in Cleveland.
Trumble entered the NCAA championship as the second seed and competed in the heavyweight 285 lbs. Representing NC State University, he capped off a perfect 21-0 season. After besting Brenan Morgan and Brady Colbert in the first two rounds and then defeating Konner Doucet and Taye Ghadiali in the quarterfinals and semifinals, he locked horns with Yonger Bastida in the final round.
Delivering a dominant performance against Iowa State’s wrestler, Trumble claimed a 5-0 decision victory and earned his first-ever NCAA champion title. Months after this feat, he recently weighed in on his victory, how he was overlooked his entire life, and how he couldn’t achieve what he wanted to in his wrestling career for a long period of time. He further spoke about his comeback and winning the title, saying:
“It took a long time for me to get where I was. I mean, I started wrestling in 3rd grade. I never really won a state title in elementary school until 6th grade. I didn’t win the state tournament in high school until my junior year, so I’ve been looked over my entire life,” said Isaac Trumble.
He added:
“And then I got to college, didn’t really perform the way did, but the last 2 years, 3 years, I really started to blossom and things started to snowball and it just, it was years and years on end of work that snowballed until I got to where I was and then I could kind of flourish once I got to that NCAA tournament in my senior year. I was like, this is my last shot, this is my time to shine. So just letting the kids continue to build and build and just look for the light at the end of the tunnel and continue to grow.”
Isaac Trumble opened up about the support after winning the NCAA champion title
After prevailing over Yonger Bastida in the finals and earning his first-ever NCAA title, Isaac Trumble spoke to the media, where he opened up about his performance at the championships and also made his feelings known about the support he received during the journey. Thanking his coach, his wife, and more, he said:
“I don’t know what I haven’t really soaked in yet. But I will say it was incredible to see my teammates there cheering me on and coaches, my wife right next to me. I wouldn’t be able to do without her and my teammates pushing me to be where I am today. Great coaches, great training staff. They’re incredible,” said Isaac Trumble.
