Lindsey Vonn has been in the spotlight over the past few days at the 2026 Winter Olympics after bravely choosing to compete despite a serious injury. Unfortunately, the decision didn’t end as hoped, as she later suffered a devastating crash that left fans furious.
Representing Team USA, Vonn was competing in the women’s downhill final on Sunday, February 8, in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, despite carrying a severe knee injury. Just 13 seconds into the run, she lost control, was violently thrown off her line, and slammed hard into the snow.
The 41-year-old was treated on the slope while visibly in agony, screaming and clutching her knee, before being airlifted by helicopter to a nearby hospital. Details about her condition following the crash have not yet been fully disclosed.
Fans quickly flooded X (formerly Twitter) with outrage, questioning why Lindsey Vonn was cleared to compete at the Winter Olympics despite not being fully recovered from her earlier injury. Vonn had crashed during the final World Cup downhill in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, on January 30, suffering a complete ACL rupture. Even so, she chose to rush her recovery and publicly maintained that she would still compete in Milan.
“Deary me. All credit to Lindsey Vonn for wanting to return and compete – but this was absolutely moronic. Disgraceful that her team allowed her to compete. This was always going to happen. Her knee is gonna be absolutely knackered now. Mental,” one fan wrote.
“That Lindsey Vonn crash was the most predictable s*it ever. Makes me angry she was allowed to it. I just hope she hasn’t irreparably hurt herself,” another wrote.
“I have a lot of courage for Lindsey Vonn – but having her cleared to compete was the wrong decision. I really hope she’s alright – this is devastating,” one user posted.
“Who the hell allowed Lindsey Vonn to ski in the Olympics with a torn ACL?! Irresponsible and avoidable. Hope she’s ok,” one fan tweeted.
“What a fucking dumb experiment that was. Knee replacement, ACL rupture 2 weeks ago. What the fuck did they expect ? Negligence from her medicos. Made for lots of great feel good segments for a couple of days at least Stupidly all round. Congrats,” another joined in.
“Who allowed her to participate? Nobody in her circle told her that this wasn’t a good idea? She definitely wanted to compete for sure but someone had to step in and say it’s not a good idea,” another tweeted.
Team USA’s Breezy Johnson Voices Concern for Lindsey Vonn After Gold Medal Triumph at Winter Olympics
Breezy Johnson of Team USA captured gold in the women’s alpine skiing downhill at the 2026 Winter Olympics on Sunday, clocking an early run of 1:36.10 to earn the first Olympic medal of her career. Afterwards, she shared her concern for fellow American Lindsey Vonn while addressing the media.
Johnson said she hoped Vonn’s injury was not as serious as it appeared, adding that her heart went out to the three-time Olympic gold medalist. She said:
“I hope it’s not as bad as it looked. I know how difficult it is to ski this course, and sometimes, because you love this course so much, when you crash on it and it hurts you like that, it hurts that much worse. So, my heart just goes out to her.”
Vonn’s sister, Karin Kildow, was present at the course for the downhill and spoke with NBC reporters during their live broadcast. Like many others, she felt the risk the 41-year-old took may have been too great, while expressing hope that everything would be okay soon.
