Eileen Gu Makes Surprise Monaco GP Appearance, Greets Lewis Hamilton Before Presenting Kimi Antonelli’s Pole Position Trophy

Eileen Gu recently made a surprise appearance at the Monaco Grand Prix, where she was seen sharing a wholesome moment with Lewis Hamilton. The Olympian also presented a prestigious award at the event.

Gu solicited her name in the freestyle skiing world with her dominant performances at the 2026 Winter Olympics. In the quadrennial event, she won three medals, including a gold in the women’s halfpipe and two silver medals in both Big Air and slopestyle. With these wins, her Olympic medal tally is now six medals, making her the most decorated female freestyle skier in history.

Following her victories, she appeared in several events, including Milan Fashion Week, The Met Gala, The Gold Gala, and more. Most recently, she made a surprise appearance at the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix on June 6, 2026. During her visit, she was seen catching up and meeting with the seven-time F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton in the Ferrari garage.

Why did Eileen Gu break down into tears after her Winter Olympics achievements?

While Eileen Gu witnessed one of the best moments of her career after a dominant performance at the 2026 Winter Olympics, she also faced one of the worst heartbreaks of her life. Moments after her Olympics campaign, her grandmother died. Opening up about this heartbreaking moment, she broke down into tears at the press conference, revealing the significance of her grandmother in her life.

Stating that she was inspired by her grandmother, she said:

“The reason I was late is that I just found out that my grandma passed away, and she was a really big part of my life growing up and someone I looked up to immensely. She was such a strong. She was a fighter, and I think what’s so interesting is that a lot of people just cruise through life, but she was a steamship. Like this woman commanded life, and she grabbed it by the reins, and she made it into what she wanted it to be. And she inspired me so much,” said Eileen Gu.

    She added:

“The last time I saw her before I came to the Olympics, she was very sick, so I knew that this was a possibility. I didn’t promise her that I was gonna win, but I did promise her that I was going to be brave. So I’m really happy that I was able to uphold that, and hopefully do her proud, but it’s also a really difficult time for me now.”
