Oklahoma wrestling coach David Taylor mourned the death of Jay Robinson and Daniel Frishkorn, highlighting their major impact on his wrestling team.
Robinson, who wrestled at Oklahoma State in the late 1960s before serving in the US Army, died at the age of 79 on Sunday, March 29. He was the wrestling coach of the University of Minnesota, which announced the news of his demise without revealing the reason behind it.
On the other hand, another strong wrestling personality, Frishkorn, a Virginia wrestling legend and former Oklahoma State All-American, died on March 27.
Frishkorn’s death was confirmed by his brother, Jordan Frishkorn, on Facebook, as he penned a long, heartfelt message for him. The two devastating pieces of news caught Taylor’s attention, who remembered their significance at the Oklahoma Wrestling team. Highlighting their lasting impact, he said:
“J Robinson and Daniel Frishkorn had a positive impact on many of us in the wrestling community, and we are saddened to hear about their passings. They were both great ambassadors for Oklahoma State Cowboy Wrestling and will be missed.”
The Oklahoma State Cowboys recently competed at the 2026 NCAA Wrestling Championships, where they secured a second-place finish after delivering a bunch of dominant performances. They earned a total of 131.0 points after three wrestlers secured individual titles and one wrestler stood in second place.
The team featured eight All-Americans. The first place was nabbed by Penn State with 181.5 points.
David Taylor opened up about beating Penn State in the future
After wrapping up the NCAA Wrestling Championships, David Taylor addressed the media, where he spoke about various aspects of his team’s performance at the tournament. One of the reporters asked him about what his team has to do to defeat Penn State or any other team in front of him.
Taylor opened up about his team’s potential and said that they will keep working on the areas that need improvement and do their best. Calling the Nittany Lions the ‘best team,’ he said:
“We got to score some more points. You know, it takes a team effort. I mean, you know, what Penn State has built is incredible. You know, you’re talking about the best team in history, you know, but what we’re putting together is a great team, and we have a very strong nucleus of guys that really believe,” said David Taylor.
He added:
“You can see the belief like one year, okay, we had a couple of national champs last year, and you know, we had a great year, and now there’s a belief like we’re going to be at our best in the national tournament, and it will keep that momentum building. A lot of high-character kids and got to keep working towards it. It doesn’t happen overnight, you know, definitely doesn’t. But we’re going to just try and keep getting better,” he added.
David Taylor was hired as the head wrestling coach at Oklahoma State University on May 7, 2024.
