Ole Miss scored one of its biggest recruiting wins of the 2027 cycle this week by landing elite defensive lineman Mitchell Turner over Alabama, LSU, and Texas.
The four-star prospect announced his commitment to the Rebels on Tuesday. He is one of the top defensive linemen in the country and is currently ranked No. 3 DL in the 2027 Rivals300.
The commitment led to quite a few fan reactions online.
“And there goes all their NIL money.” – one wrote.
“But we couldn’t recruit without Kiffin I thought.” – a user wrote.
Several fans questioned whether any commitment in this era can truly be considered as final.
“All this for him to flip somewhere else in two weeks. Recruiting is such a joke now.” – one wrote.
“Hope this one lasts more than 24 hours!” – another wrote.
“Ole miss spending 40 million to attempt relevancy without lane.” another wrote.
Why Mitchell Turner Chose Ole Miss Over Alabama
Turner told Rivals that his official visit to Ole Miss proved to be the turning point in his recruitment.
“On the official visit is the point when they moved ahead of Alabama for sure,” Turner said. “Being on that visit, spending more time with the coaches and just being there changed things.”
A major factor was defensive line coach Randall Joyner, whose reputation for developing NFL-caliber defensive linemen stood out.
“The way Coach Joyner breaks down things and coaches, the way he motivates people and gets them going make him one of the best.”
“Coach Joyner’s track record of developing defensive linemen made Ole Miss always stand out. The way he develops players was a very big thing for me. The way he gets guys from my area — my state — to the NFL… how can you turn it down?” – he added.
Turner recorded 103 tackles, 41 tackles for loss, and 15.5 sacks last season.
Whether fans focus on development or the possibility of future flips, it’s clear that Ole Miss has secured a commitment from one of the nation’s top defensive line prospects.
