Notre Dame HC Marcus Freeman is actively trying to recruit one of the fastest-rising defensive backs in the 2027 class.
Four-star cornerback Monsanna Torbert recently decommitted from Indiana, reopening his recruitment. The Cincinnati native is now drawing attention from several powerhouse programs, and Notre Dame appears to be in the race.
In January Torbert committed to Curt Cignetti and Indiana during their impressive national title run. However, his rankings have exploded over the last few months, turning him into one of the most sought-after defensive prospects in the country.
According to Rivals, the 5-foot-10 defensive back is now ranked as a Top 70 overall recruit and the No. 10 cornerback in the nation.
Marcus Freeman Making Another Strong Push
Notre Dame will host Torbert for an official visit from June 19-21, and that timing is very important as that will be the final official visit before Torbert eventually makes his decision.
Getting him on board would be a major win for Marcus Freeman.
It won’t be easy that’s for sure as both Ohio State and Michigan are set to receive official visits as well, while programs like Texas, Alabama, Florida State, Oklahoma and South Carolina continue monitoring the situation closely.
Freeman has built strong relationships across the Midwest recruiting landscape, and Torbert reportedly values both Notre Dame’s recent success and its player development track record.
Why Monsanna Torbert Has Become a Priority Target
Torbert’s athletic profile is a major reason his recruitment has exploded.
He has also played as a quarterback during his high school career. And last season, he threw for more than 3,600 yards and 50 touchdowns while adding another 1,000 rushing yards on the ground.
Recruiting analysts believe his speed, instincts and ball-tracking ability make him a natural fit in the secondary despite limited full-time reps at cornerback.
Notre Dame already has several talented defensive backs committed in the 2027 cycle, including four-star prospects Xavier Hasan and Ace Alston.
However, Freeman and defensive backs coach Mike Mickens are clearly not done adding talent.
Landing Torbert would give Notre Dame another major recruiting win against Big Ten competition and further strengthen what is already shaping up to be one of the nation’s top defensive classes.
For now, Ohio State may still be viewed as the slight favorite, but Notre Dame also has a decent chance of getting him.
