Was Drafting Ty Simpson Sean McVay’s Decision? Analyst Weighs In on Mindset Behind Rams’ No. 13th Overall Pick

Ty Simpson has embarked on his NFL journey after being selected as the No. 13th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams.

There was a bit of confusion about Simpson’s landing spot before the 2026 NFL Draft took place as many analysts couldn’t accurately project where the former Alabama star was going to go.

One of the most viral moments from the NFL Draft this year was when Simpson got the call from the Rams and he expressed excitement about making history with the franchise and Sean McVay didn’t reciprocate the same feeling, making people wonder if he was not happy with the decision.

Talking about Simpson’s move to the Rams, analyst Peter Schrager shared his thoughts:

“That this is a Sean McVay decision. Make no doubts about it. Any decision in that organization is going to be signed off by McVay. Stafford, to them, they’d love for him to stay there three, four years, whatever. But he is year to year. And looking at his age and the fact it’s a final season maybe with the L.A. Super Bowl, if it all goes that way, they don’t envision themselves ever having a top five, top ten pick.

“So we’re talking about the Jets and being in the Arch Manning sweepstakes. The Rams don’t see that. They also looked at the free agent landscape for the next couple years. They don’t see a big name. So they said at 13th overall, no Lemons on the board, I know Sadiq’s on the board. We’re going to take a quarterback and ensure that we have a handoff plan once Stafford does call it quits.”

Dan Orlovsky Weighs In on Rams Choosing Ty Simpson As 13th Overall Pick

Dan Orlovsky, who has been one of the most vocal supporters of Simpson all throughout the Draft process, shared his thoughts on Rams taking the former Alabama star as the No. 13th overall pick and said it was the right decision.

Orlovsky said the Rams should have taken a quarterback rather than a wide receiver, which many analysts argue should’ve been the case.

“If you think the Rams are 52 catches and 4 touchdowns away from a wide receiver from going to the Super Bowl and winning it, you’re out of your mind,” Orlovsky added.
