Tua Tagovailoa’s future has been the source of speculation and predictions by fans and analysts for much of the past six months. After the quarterback had one of the least productive seasons of any quarterback in 2025, Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan was faced with a choice.
He appears not to be shying away from the franchise-altering decision, according to a statement made at the NFL Combine via an X post by NFL insider Cameron Wolfe on Tuesday.
“Everything is on (the) table, including (the) possibility of a trade,” Sullivan said.
In other words, the decision has not been finalized, but every avenue is being considered. Once talk gets to this level with general managers, who are often reserved when it comes to their quarterbacks, it is often a done deal that something will happen. The question is what.
Of course, based on the situation with Tagovailoa’s contract, an outright release might be out of the question.
Tua Tagovailoa Contract
According to Spotrac, Tua Tagovailoa is still under contract through the 2028 season. However, he is nearing an early out window in which a release would save Miami money in 2027. Of course, that would mean holding onto Tagovailoa for another season under his current deal in what would be his second-most-expensive cap hit year of the entire $212.4 million deal.
As such, the fastest financially responsible way to deal with Tagovailoa would be to trade him to a team that would accept some or all of the financial burden of the quarterback.
Such a sell might be difficult, especially after Tagovailoa finished with the second-most interceptions in the NFL, two behind Geno Smith’s 17.
