Deion Sanders has been a big advocate of Travis Hunter’s ability to play on both sides of the ball, with Coach Prime even warning teams not to draft him if they planned to limit the former Heisman trophy winner.
Hunter’s rookie season with the Jaguars didn’t go as expected because of his season-ending knee injury that took place in the middle of the season, something that a lot of players and analysts warned him about when talking about him playing as a two-way player.
DJ Siddiqi of Covers sat with Deion Sanders for an exclusive conversation on Wednesday. The Colorado coach was asked whether Hunter should continue playing on both sides of the ball or finally pick a side.
“There’s no comparison to what he’s able to produce on the field,” Sanders said. “It’s no comparison. I can’t say who I would compare him to, because I would be lessening that person. That’s not fair to him or the people that I’m comparing him to. He’s different, man.”
”They’re not going to ask me, ‘I thank God that you’re asking me’. The kid won the Heisman Trophy playing both sides of the ball,” Sanders told Siddiqi. “That’s all I gotta say on that.” He said.
Liam Coen Offers Insight Into Travis Hunter’s Progress During OTAs
The Jacksonville Jaguars recently began their OTAs for the 2026 NFL season, with Hunter getting down on the field after a long time.
Hunter spent the second half of the season and the entire offseason recovering from his injury.
Jaguars head coach Liam Coen gave fans an update on May 29th on how Hunter is doing and said that the former Colorado star has been making good use of the virtual room that they have at the facility, where you can essentially play a game from the defensive back’s perspective.
“All you see is the linebackers, the D-line, and the offense, and so he can go in there in a half hour and play a game and just go,” Coen said. “Right now, you’re not going to be able to get a ton of all the routes and how they play out, but alignment, assignment, making calls, and adjustments to formations have been so valuable to him.”
Jacksonville took Hunter with the No.2 pick in the 2025 NFL draft.
