Kyler Murray and JJ McCarthy have been involved in a race for the team’s starting spot ever since the former Arizona Cardinals quarterback signed with the Minnesota Vikings. Murray’s recent comments about the quarterback situation in Minnesota drew the wrath of two-time Super Bowl champion LeSean McCoy.
On Tuesday’s episode of the podcast ‘Speakeasy’, McCoy accused the veteran quarterback of being ‘super cocky’ and ‘arrogant.’
“I hate a super cocky, arrogant player that’s not that good, that’s a little above average. That is Kyler Murray. when you watch Kyler Murray, he gets so bad where he starts, ‘You know what? I’ve been great in high school. I’ve been great.’ Oh, bro, what have you done for us lately? Because you’ve had some good wide receivers.”
McCoy objected to Murray’s comments in a post-practice conference on Tuesday. The quarterback discussed the ‘tough’ part of sharing reps with another player, saying:
“I think the toughest part is, again, I was [in Arizona] for seven years. I know I had two different offensive systems. But at the same time, you’re getting all those reps, you know, now having to split reps. Me already being behind, not getting the amount of reps that, you know, you would typically want a guy to get [while] learning an offense.”
Although they are locked in a battle for the starting spot, JJ McCarthy had earlier said there was no awkwardness between the two players.
LeSean McCoy claims Kyler Murray is not the answer to Minnesota’s problems
LeSean McCoy also pointed out the narrative around Kyler Murray’s signing.
I keep saying, why is everybody acting like he’s about to save the day? Because if you really watch Kyler Murray, he comes off like a quarterback that is super talented, that’s elusive, that can run, has a big arm, can’t read coverages. You can’t depend on him. He always starts out hot and eventually ends cold.”
While Kyler Murray has shown his explosive abilities over the years, the Vikings quarterback has been accused of falling short in crunch situations. Arizona made the playoffs just once during Murray’s tenure, and he threw two interceptions in that game, while mustering 137 yards.
Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell has maintained there is no tension in the Vikings quarterback room; however, the starting spot for the 2026 season is still up for grabs as Week 1 nears.
