Pat McAfee has made a name for himself more as a host and TV personality nowadays than as a renowned NFL kicker. Whether for wrestling or football, McAfee has proven to be a dynamic and entertaining host, and with his ESPN contract nearing its end, it seems that the network wants to keep him around for a few more years.
The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand is reporting that the former Indianapolis Colts kicker is currently discussing a contract extension, and it could be worth over $60 million. This shows how much they value McAfee, who hosts several shows with the network.
With that reported amount, many are surprised and impressed with how much the former punter might be making. Others, meanwhile, not so much.
“Not bad for a punter,” said one X user.
“It probably costs ESPN ~ $40m/year to produce First Take, including on-air talent + production and BTS crew.. McAfee produces his own show and pays his talent, so $60m/year isn’t that “crazy” if they believe McAfee is worth 2x Stephen A. 🤷🏾♂️,” one commenter pointed out.
“McAfee and game day are the only two watchable shows on espn anymore,” said another X user.
“Kicker money isn’t the same as it used to be,” joked another person.
“GOAT. Well deserved,” a supporter added.
“ESPN is dead but this might be what really kills them. Just like committing to Stephen A Smith, all style no substance,” opined one critic.
An agreement has not yet been reached, and the deal has not been finalized yet. If this does go through, though, Pat McAfee will be getting paid a lot more than some current NFL stars.
Only 2 Current NFL Players Will Make More Than Pat McAfee Should Deal Push Through
With the amount of money that Pat McAfee might be getting by staying with ESPN, only two current NFL players will be making more than him at a possible $60 million a year. Unsurprisingly, both of them are quarterbacks.
Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott is set to earn $61.6 million next season, while Joe Burrow will reportedly earn around $61.3 million with the Cincinnati Bengals. They are the only two players to reach that $60 million a year mark.
