The Cleveland Browns have a new head coach in former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken. The new coach has arrived in Cleveland and has met some players already, including current starting quarterback Shedeur Sanders, the son of NFL legend Deion Sanders.
Now, it is no secret that the Ravens did try to draft Sanders, but he turned them down as he would not get any playing time with two-time MVP Lamar Jackson as QB1. The Sanders family have been very public about it, and now, former Ravens OC and new Browns head coach Todd Monken has come clean and admitted something as soon as he met the youngest Sanders son.
“We tried to draft your a**” he told Shedeur Sanders. “It’s all worked out. You remember that, right? Someday we’ll get a chance to talk about that.”
During the 2025 draft, the Ravens had the 141st pick, and they wanted to use that on Shedeur Sanders. However, his camp turned it down because of the presence of Lamar Jackson, and he instead went to the Cleveland Browns to become the No. 144 pick. The Browns’ picking him did raise some eyebrows, though, as the team already had a lot of quarterbacks at that time, with Shedeur eventually becoming QB3.
After Sanders turned him down, the Ravens drafted offensive lineman Carson Vinson instead as their No. 144 pick. As for Shedeur, the Browns traded away QB1 Joe Flacco and had fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel take the reins as the new QB1, with Shedeur becoming QB2. When Gabriel got concussed, Sanders soon found himself as the new QB1
Shedeur Sanders Future As Browns Starter in Todd Monken’s Hands
The Cleveland Browns finally have their Pro Bowl QB in Shedeur Sanders, but the young QB1 still has plenty to improve on from last season. That being said, it was Monken who wanted to draft him for the Ravens, and now that he is the new Browns head coach, Shedeur’s future is now up in the air, even if he is a Pro Bowler.
Sanders has one of the lowest QB ratings for any Pro Bowl quarterback, and as his head coach, Todd Monken is aware of that fact. However, Sanders is still a work in progress and has a high ceiling. In the end, though, it would still be up to Todd Monken and the Browns management to decide if Shedeur stays as QB1.
