Sam Darnold has had a tumultuous journey in the league. From being one of the Heisman favorites in college to becoming a first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Darnold had a good run in his collegiate football career.
After starting his NFL career with the New York Jets, Darnold had his fair share of ups and downs with a team that has struggled for the last few years. Darnold finished his final Jets season with more interceptions, 11, than touchdowns, 9.
Since then, he struggled to find stability in his career. The Seattle Seahawks are his fourth team since 2021, fifth overall. And now, the quarterback is taking his team to the Super Bowl, their first Super Bowl appearance in over a decade.
Darnold went 25 of 36 for 346 yards and three touchdowns in the Conference Championship game against the Los Angeles Rams tonight. While he’s deservedly getting all the praise for it, ESPN’s Rich Cimini dug up an old video of Darnold to showcase how far he has come.
Cimini posted a clip from back in 2018 when Darnold played his first game for the Jets. He finished the game with 198 yards and two touchdowns and helped the Jets secure a dominant 48-17 win. Darnold was greeted by his parents after the game.
“Remember when? Sam Darnold greeted by his parents after his first Jets game – Sept. 11, 2018, a win over the Lions. Quite a journey. Now he’s going to the Super Bowl … with the Seahawks,” Cimini posted.
At the age of 28, Darnold will be the key player for his team as they face the New England Patriots for the Super Bowl title on February 8 in Santa Clara.
Mike Macdonald Praised Sam Darnold
The Seahawks’ win was a result of the team’s collective effort. Months of work, game plan, execution, practice, and more went into the Seahawks securing a spot in the Super Bowl showdown. Darnold arguably played the most important role.
After the win, their head coach, Mike Macdonald, was elated by the win and even struggled to put his feelings into words. Macdonald stated that he can’t talk about the win without giving Darnold praise for what he did.
“He just shut a lot of people up tonight, and I’m really happy for him,” Macdonald said.
The coach stated that he’s blessed to work with great players for a great organization, owner, and fans. Darnold is now one win away from becoming a Super Bowl champion.
