Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is recovering from his ACL and LCL injuries. Mahomes is focused on being available for his team when the 2026 season rolls out, and so far, he’s ahead of schedule.
While Mahomes recovers, he is enjoying the offseason watching the FIFA World Cup. Recently, Mahomes, his mother Randi, and several family members attended the Argentina vs. Algeria group-stage game at Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the Chiefs.
Randi posted several pictures of the family’s day out on Instagram. Her post included videos of the Argentinian team warming up ahead of the game. One specific clip was focused on forward Lionel Messi.
The game provided an opportunity for the Mahomes family to spend time together, and Patrick Mahomes’ mother was very happy about it.
“Kansas City, Argentina soccer, and family time… doesn’t get much better than that,” she wrote. “So much fun cheering on Argentina and making memories with some of my favorite people!”
It was a historic night for Messi. In addition to scoring his first career World Cup hat-trick, he became the first player to take the pitch in six different men’s World Cups. He also became the oldest player to score a World Cup hat-trick.
The Argentinian tied Miroslav Klose for the most goals in men’s FIFA World Cup history with 16. While the accomplishment is remarkable, it also caused a lot of controversy because he shouldn’t have been on the pitch to score two of his three goals.
Lionel Messi Should’ve Been Sent Off
The biggest controversy from Argentina’s 3-0 win over Algeria centered on Messi’s challenge on Aïssa Mandi, a tackle that many fans, pundits, and former players felt warranted at least a yellow card.
Some argued that it should’ve been a red card and Messi should’ve been sent off as it met the threshold for a red due to the nature of the contact. He stomped midway up the calf of Mandi.
“It’s 100% a red card for Lionel Messi. It should’ve been,” ESPN analyst said.
Despite the incident being reviewed, neither the referee nor VAR issued any disciplinary action, allowing Messi to remain on the pitch. Messi had scored one goal at the time of the challenge.
Critics argue that the decision fundamentally altered the game’s narrative, claiming that another player would likely have faced punishment for a similar challenge. Even if Messi didn’t get the “star treatment”, Argentina would have likely won the game as they were dominant with 6 of 9 shots on target compared to Algeria’s 0 of 6. However, the controversial decision remains a blot on his historic night.
