The Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, Eric Bieniemy, faced a tragedy on Sunday when his wife. Mia Bieniemy was shot by their son at home in Virginia.
Mia was hospitalized and is now in a stable condition, and her son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, was arrested and charged with use of a firearm in the commission of a felony of a firearm inside a dwelling and malicious wounding.
Eilaj reportedly shot Mia in the chest and arm.
Reacting to the situation, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid offered his prayers to the family during a press conference on Monday.
“We’ll just see how things go,” Reid said. “[This is] real life, you take care of that. She’s a saint, one of God’s good blessings. But things happen.”
“Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family. Thoughts and prayers are with them. I can’t get into the details, but things happen sometimes, and Eric will work through it. He’s got a great support group here, as does his family, as needed. And then we’ll just let time take care of it from there. But Mia is stable, which is a plus, and so is Eric Jr., and that’s all important. I know things will work out. The most important thing is that EB has an opportunity to spend some time [with his family] and take care of that business. Everybody loves EB. He’s a great person.”
“Things happen. You have to work through it, and time will be involved to help heal a little bit. It’ll all work out in the long run.”
Louis Riddick Sends Prayers to Eric Bieniemy amid Tragic Events
Along with Reid, Louis Riddick also sent his condolences to Eric Bieniemy as his family goes through this tough phase of life.
The former NFL Safety and now analyst, Riddick, took to X to share his thoughts on the situation:
“Nothing but 🙏🏾 and love for my guy Coach Eric Bieniemy and his lovely wife as she recovers from a horrible sequence of events. Unimaginable what that family and the #Chiefs family must be feeling. My respect for that group is endless. Nothing but the best thoughts 🫡.”
Eric rejoined the Chiefs in January 2026 for his second stint with the franchise; previously, he held the position from 2018 to 2022.
