“Keep That [Madden] Curse Away From JSN”: NFL World Reacts As Caleb Williams Rumored To Feature On Madden 27 Cover

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams is turning into the EA Sports Madden 27 cover athlete. After a short two seasons among the pros, the video game publisher chose the former USC quarterback to be the face of their iconic franchise. This, according to MUTLeaks, a popular football gaming account.

Fans were a bit conflicted by the decision by the videogame industry giant, with some pointing out that Caleb Williams was now on route to suffer the so-called Madden curse.

“Thank god keep that curse away from JSN,” said ostensibly, a Seahawks fan

According to football’s popular culture, the players who feature on the Madden cover have a high likelihood of having poor seasons or outright suffering career-changing injuries. Did Caleb Williams save other players from the curse?

“Caleb shielded Drake maye from the madden curse,” said a Patriots fan

Fans mostly disagreed with the choice of player by EA Sports.

“Random ass cover player pick. Hasn’t done shit in the NFL since being drafted,” complained someone

“Stop messing around. We all want George Pickens and CD Lamb on the cover,” demanded another person

“Did nobody else want to do it?” joked another individual

I would say the Madden curse is coming for Caleb Williams, but he hasn’t been good enough to notice if his play slides,” explained another person

Other people were okay with the choice, but they just didn’t like the presentation.

“Cover would have been dope minus the posing. Just use a gameplay pic 🤦‍♂️,” wrote one fan

If confirmed, Williams would be the first Bears player to be on the cover of the video game.

What does Ben Johnson expect from Caleb Williams in 2026?

This season will be Caleb Williams’ third, and his second with coach Ben Johnson. In the first year, Johnson wanted Williams to improve in the details and to master leading the huddle and communicating with his teammates.

Now, for their second year together, Johnson wants the same but even more detailed. This is what he told the press this week:

“Now, it’s the next level of each concept, what are we trying to do and potentially expanding on, ‘Hey, here’s your progression, one, two, three’ to how can we accelerate our eyes, our vision? What are we looking for? Some coverage indicators to where we might take more alerts, things of that nature,” Johnson said. “A little bit more minutia with it, but those guys have been really receptive to it.”

In 2025, there was already a significant improvement. Williams was the top seventh quarterback in the league in total yardage, and the 16th best in terms of QBR.
