We are two weeks away from the official announcement of this season’s NFL MVP award. So far, it has become clear that the competition is mainly between Matthew Stafford, Drake Maye, Josh Allen, Trevor Lawrence, and Caleb Williams.
While we can’t dismiss any of the other top players from the season because they’ve had a brilliant run, we’re nearing the end of the season, and the five names mentioned above have made the biggest impact.
The current rankings for the MVP differ among fans, experts, and sportsbook platforms. The consensus is that it’s a toss-up between Maye, Stafford, and Lawrence. The following players have been announced as the finalists for the honor by the league.
NFL MVP Finalists Ft. Josh Allen, Trevor Lawrence, and Others
Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills QB
The Buffalo Bills’ season came to an end after their loss against the Denver Broncos in the Divisional Round. The reason why Allen is one of the favorites to win the MVP this year is because of the heavy lifting he had to do throughout the season.
The 3668 yards with 25 touchdowns and seventh in QBR rankings doesn’t paint the full picture. While the numbers are impressive, Allen has probably done the most among all finalists to take his team to the playoffs.
Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars QB
Lawrence recorded a 4000-yard season with 29 touchdowns to take his team to the playoffs. Unfortunately, he couldn’t move past the Wild Card Round as they faced the Bills and lost. But Lawrence is getting well-deserved recognition for his run.
Drake Maye, New England Patriots QB
The 23-year-old deserves all the praise for what he has been able to achieve in just his second season in the league. In terms of stats, he stands toe to toe against the best in the league with 4394 yards, 31 touchdowns, and just eight interceptions.
Maye ranks 1st in the QBR ratings, he has taken his team to the Conference Championship round, and has been a very capable leader throughout the season. All of those qualities and accomplishments have made arguably one of the top two contenders for MVP this season.
Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams QB
This has been Stafford’s season. With 4707 yards, 46 touchdowns, and just eight interceptions, he has put the league on notice. It’s not just individual brilliance that makes Stafford arguably the top candidate for MVP honors.
His personal numbers have translated well in his team’s success. The Rams are just one win away from securing a spot in the Super Bowl. Even Tom Brady has endorsed Stafford for MVP this year.
Christian McCaffrey, San Francisco 49ers RB
McCaffrey is the only non-QB finalist for the MVP honor this year. That tells you everything you must know about the impact the 49ers RB has made this year. 1202 yards on 311 rushing attempts with 10 touchdowns and 924 yards on 102 receptions for another seven touchdowns.
McCaffrey has been on top of his game this season. It’s unfortunate that his team got eliminated in the Divisional Round against the Seahawks. Despite that, his presence in the finalists for the MVP race is well deserved.
