The Buffalo Bills already let go of head coach Sean McDermott after a painful loss to the Denver Broncos in the NFL Divisional round. Now, they might be about to lose another important member of their coaching staff, although this time not of their own volition.
The NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero has reported that the Baltimore Ravens have been impressed by the Bills’ offensive coordinator Joe Brady, and they want to bring him in for a follow-up interview for the head coaching vacancy. Baltimore is without a head coach after having parted ways with John Harbaugh after 18 seasons and a Super Bowl win.
Harbaugh was fired for failing to take the Ravens to the postseason this time around, following a defeat in their regular-season finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The game decided the winner of the AFC North.
Ironically, the Steelers would also end their long-time association with Mike Tomlin, another Super Bowl-winning coach, following a heavy defeat to the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round. It just goes to show the current state of the coaching market, and the big moves the tail end of this season is bringing about.
Buffalo Bills’ Statement on Sean McDermott’s Firing
There’s no doubt that Sean McDermott was fired by the Buffalo Bills due to a lack of postseason success. The statement by the team’s owner, Terry Pegula, on Monday said as much:
“Sean helped change the mindset of this organization and was instrumental in the Bills becoming a perennial playoff team. But I feel we are in need of a new structure within our leadership to give this organization the best opportunity to take our team to the next level.”
“Brandon will oversee all facets of our football operation,” Pegula added. “I have full faith in and have witnessed Brandon’s outstanding leadership style and have confidence in his abilities to lead our organization.”
That’s been the big problem with the Bills in the last few years. Despite impressive regular-season performances and equally impressive individual performances by Josh Allen, the team never translated them into postseason success.
In nine seasons in charge of the Bills, McDermott took them to the AFC championship only twice, falling to the Kansas City Chiefs on both occasions.
