WATCH: Nahshon Wright Delivers Emotional Tribute to Coach Beam With Stunning End-Zone INT vs. Vikings

Chicago Bears cornerback Nahshon Wright was emotional after picking off JJ McCarthy in the end zone during Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings. The moment happened late in the second quarter when the Vikings quarterback threw a deep pass in the end zone.

Wright followed the receiver to whom McCarthy targeted and caught the attempted pass for an interception, preventing the Vikings from tying the game before halftime.

Immediately after he made a stellar play on defense, he went down on one knee to remember and pay tribute to his former coach, John Beam, who tragically died this week.

John Beam coached Laney from 2005 to 2011 and then again from 2012 to 2024 before taking on administrative duties last season.

After attending James Logan High School, Wright was recruited by Beam’s Laney in 2018. There, he won the state championship while recording 12 starts, 17 tackles (1.5 for loss), four interceptions, and three passes defensed, and earning All-conference honors. The following season, he transferred to Oregon State, where he played until 2020 before being picked 99th overall in the 2021 NFL draft.

What Happened to Nahshon Wright’s Former Coach, John Beam?

On Thursday, John Beam was shot on the campus of Laney College in Oakland. After the shooting, Beam was hospitalized, but he died the next day at the age of 66.

According to the LA Times, the 27-year-old suspect, Cedric Irving Jr., has been arrested. Authorities claimed that Irving and Beam knew each other but didn’t have a close relationship. The shell casings found at the incident reportedly match the gun recovered from Irving.

Oakland Assistant Chief James Beere said:

“This was a very targeted incident.”

In Netflix’s Last Chance U, the relationship of Beam with several of his Laney players, including Nahshon Wright, has been highlighted.

Beam’s former players and brothers Nahshon and Rejzohn Wright, currently playing with the Bears and the New Orleans Saints, mourn the loss of their former coach after the shooting on social media.

“You mean the world to me,” Rejzohn said in a post.

Meanwhile, Nehshon shared the coach’s photo with a broken heart emoji.
