If Lavonte David is retiring, he certainly knows how to drum up interest. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker is in the news and with his fate uncertain, the next step of his career is on less than solid footing. However, what is the next step for David?
According to a Mar. 24 Tuesday report on X by Ari Meirov, the linebacker has scheduled a press conference. Players usually schedule offseason press conferences only if a significant change in their careers has occurred or will occur in the near future.
“Bucs LB and current free agent Lavonte David will have a press conference today at 2 PM ET,” Meirov wrote. “He has spent all 14 years of his career in Tampa Bay and has said he’s only playing for the Bucs or retiring.”
So, the linebacker is either about to announce he will be back with the team for another period of time or walking away for good. With David still a free agent and seemingly calling his own press conference, signs appear to be pointing toward a retirement announcement. Of course, one can only wait until his announcement to know for sure.
Lavonte David’s Career in Review
If this is the end for Lavonte David, it ends a run of 14 years in the NFL, all of which was with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
His biggest moment was winning the Super Bowl in 2020 in the first season of the Tom Brady era after nearly a decade of pushing through the years.
However, David’s best season was arguably 2015, when the linebacker secured his only Pro Bowl appearance in a season in which he also secured a Week 11 NFC Defensive Player of the Week award.
While not known for sacks, David was known for getting players on the ground with a minimum of 139 tackles in each of his first four seasons. He also delivered in the sack department in 2013 with seven sacks, which ended up being by far his best season in the category.
David’s first NFL accomplishment was how quickly he was selected. The Buccaneers took David 58th overall in the 2012 NFL draft.
