The Kyler Murray-J.J. McCarthy competition is one of the biggest competitions of the summer, and it’s underway at OTAs. McCarthy has already caused a stir with comments about his relationship with Murray, but actions speak louder than words, and the better quarterback on the practice field will get the starting job.
As such, here’s a look at how Murray is fitting in with the team in his first real practices with the entire unit. One Friday report from ESPN’s Kevin Seifert summed up how the quarterback has done thus far.
“Murray made all of the best throws of the practice, demonstrating his downfield touch and accuracy. … While McCarthy’s post-practice comments about their relationship delivered headlines, it was Murray who might have said the most notable four words of the afternoon: ‘My confidence is unshakeable,'” Seifert wrote.
Put simply, Murray appears focused and seemingly in the lead in the quarterback competition after outperforming McCarthy. Jordan Addison caught one particular pass from Murray that was a sight to behold in a clip posted by Vikings media on X on Wednesday.
The pass hit Addison in stride on a deep fly route straight down the sideline. The pass was caught over the shoulder and brought into the endzone for a touchdown. Members of the team let out a cheer.
Why Did the Arizona Cardinals Let Go of Kyler Murray
With Kyler Murray having a quality introduction to the Vikings, fans of the team might ask themselves why Murray was allowed out the door.
Put simply, it came down to expectations versus results. The Cardinals were given a playoff appearance and a consistently improving record during Murray’s rookie contract. However, after the team gave him a breakout second contract, the team started to trend down with every season ending under .500.
That, plus a coaching change from Kliff Kingsbury to Johnathan Gannon, plus a disastrous Murray injury near the end of his time in Arizona, gave the team enough reason to try something new.
Murray ended up in Minnesota as a result, with one goal: winning the starting job.
