Sports commentator Jason Whitlock compared seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady to NBA free-agent star LeBron James in a negative sense.
After informing the Los Angeles Lakers that he won’t return for his ninth season there, James has become an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career. Everyone in the NBA circle is being noisy about his next destination, with the Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers posing as the likely destinations. James is also teasing NBA fans with his public appearances.
According to Whitlock, this is similar to how Brady went about his business before his eventual retirement. The sports commentator pointed to numerous “Brady’s post-retirement antics” to suggest that it’s post-retirement “withdrawal symptoms.”
“Brady already walked through the door,” Whitlock said. “Greatest ever to do it retires. And then what? Turns out the most disciplined competitor of his generation had no idea what to do on the other side. The broadcast booth didn’t fill it. The billion-dollar broadcast deal didn’t fill it.
“So now what’s Brady doing? Publicity stunts, slap fights with Logan Paul, flirting with a WWE storyline. The greatest quarterback alive is auditioning to be a pro wrestling angle. It’s not a hobby, folks. That’s a withdrawal symptom.”
According to Whitlock on Tuesday, contrary to conventional belief, James is not chasing his fifth NBA ring; he is “chasing the spotlight” because the NBA legend knows his relevance will be gone when he hears that final buzzer.
“LeBron and Brady have every earthly thing a man could want and no heavenly anchor to tell them why any of it matters,” Whitlock said. “So they cling to the set. They fear the door because, for a man with no God, the end of the career really does look like the end of the world.”
LeBron James Asked to Follow Tom Brady’s Post-Retirement Move
After winning his seventh Super Bowl and retiring one season later, Tom Brady inked a 10-year, $375 million deal with Fox Sports to become lead NFL game analyst. With this, Brady stayed within the NFL circles.
Similar to this, with retirement casting a shadow on LeBron James’ NBA career, the former Lakers star was asked to follow a similar approach by former Boston Celtics champion Kendrick Perkins. The NBA analyst has given an alternative career option for James, inviting him to join ESPN.
“How about I make a pitch for us at NBA Today on ESPN,” Perkins said. “Hey, Bron, you don’t really need to play anymore. You’re really good at breaking down the game. You have a high IQ for the game of basketball, and I’m pretty sure that over here at the Worldwide Leader, the Mouse, we can pay you more than the vet minimum.
“How about you go here and close this chapter of your career and start your new one? We’re waiting on you, my brother. You see what Tom Brady is doing?”
This comes at a time when, as part of restructuring, ESPN is sacking many notable names such as Ryan Clark, Cam Newton and others.
