The Baltimore Ravens are still looking for a head coach after having parted ways with John Harbaugh at the end of the regular season after 18 years. While Harbaugh has already found a new home at the New York Giants, the Ravens are yet to hire anyone, which has puzzled some in the industry.
For ESPN’s Adam Schefter, this isn’t unusual. It’s very in character for the franchise’s drafting habits. They sit back before making their move, he pointed out – something he believes Steve Bisciotti is trying to replicate in their coach search. On Tuesday, he explained as much in his podcast:
“The way the Ravens are approaching this hiring cycle, to me, is very similar to the way that they draft. They sit back at the end of the round, they watch all the teams in front of them make their moves, and then the Baltimore Ravens step in and make their selection with whatever greatness is left.”
“Whether that’s Lamar Jackson at 32, or Kyle Hamilton at 14. Or whatever it’s. I feel like, in their coaching process, they’re doing the same thing. They’re sitting back, they’re letting Atlanta hire, they’re letting Miami hire, they’re letting Tennessee hire, and this would not have been the hires that the Ravens would’ve made anyway. So all these candidates are coming off the dance floor, and then in the end they’re going to pick some guy that’s going to come in there and probably be as much of a success as a coach as many of their tough draft picks have been,” he further elaborated.
The reality is this is a record-breaking coaching shuffle cycle, with a record-tying 10 teams changing head coaches. While they have already made their picks, plenty of others, like the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Buffalo Bills, the Cleveland Browns, the Arizona Cardinals, and the Las Vegas Raiders, are yet to make theirs. Veteran coaches like Mike Tomlin are still unpicked. Lots of things could happen yet.
Jesse Minter Is Set To Have A Second Interview With The Baltimore Ravens
While Mike Tomlin is the biggest name available in the open market, it seems the Ravens are moving in a different direction moving forward: Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter. Minter has been in charge of the Chargers’ defense under Jim Harbaugh for two seasons now, having made the jump with him from the Michigan Wolverines after 2023, where he was also a defense coordinator.
There’s a deep connection to the Harbaughs, as he was also on John Harbaugh’s defensive staff at Pittsburgh before that.
According to Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic, the Ravens front office will go ahead with a second interview for him this week.
