The Denver Broncos are moving on to the AFC Championship Game after barely escaping the Buffalo Bills in that thriller. However, the game still sparked a lot of drama during a Ja’Quan McMillian interception, which many saw as a pass completion for Brandin Cooks, with McMillian only prying the ball out of Cooks’ hands after he caught it.
The decision raised a lot of eyebrows, as this was considered the game-winning play, with this effectively ending the Bills’ season. Not everybody was happy with the decision as they felt that it was a clean catch from Cooks, and that included Super Bowl winner Richard Sherman, who sounded off on X about the controversial call.
“I have never seen a contested catch like this ever be called anything but a catch. Even as a DB you know that if it’s even a Tie it will go to the WR. Can’t believe this decided the game.,” the former Cornerback said.
Sherman had found himself agreeing with former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky, who pointed out that the referees should have ruled it a successful catch for Cooks and not an interception for McMillian.
The call actually has several players debating, as videos have shown that Cooks may have let go of the ball as he tumbled, which was ruled as an interception after McMillian got his hands on the ball while Cooks grabbed it back.
Bills Head Coach Sean McDermott Also Not Happy With Interception Call
During the post-game, the first person who called out that interception call was Bills head coach Sean McDermott. He sounded off on reporters, making his feelings about the call known.
“It’s hard for me to understand why it was ruled the way it was ruled,” he told reporters. “If it is ruled that way, then why wasn’t it slowed down just to make sure that we have this right. That would have made a lot of sense to me. … Because that’s a pivotal play in the game. [We’d] have the ball at the 20 and may be kicking a game-winning field goal right there.”
The Bills now have to return to the drawing board while the Broncos await the winner of the game between the Houston Texans and the New England Patriots.
