Whether the Pittsburgh Steelers will have Aaron Rodgers back for the 2026 season has been one of the biggest puzzles this offseason so far. Steelers owner Art Rooney II admitted shortly after Mike Tomlin’s resignation that Rodgers might not want to return for another season, as he came to Pittsburgh mainly to play under the veteran coach.
However, if anyone was to change that calculation is their new head coach, Mike McCarthy, under whom Rodgers won Super Bowl XLV, one Super Bowl MVP, and two NFL MVP Awards.
McCarthy admits that he wants Rodgers to return for another season. On Tuesday, he told the press after being asked if he would want Aaron Rodgers to return.
“Definitely. I don’t know why you wouldn’t,” he said.
Fans took to X to respond to McCarthy’s comment, saying that there are plenty of reasons not to want Rodgers back.
“Because he’s washed beyond belief,” said someone.
“Well they’re both too stubborn to change so it’s probably for the best since they want to do the same thing😂,” wrote someone else.
“Tank a year for once Steelers,” said someone else.
Is Aaron Rodgers even at an NFL level anymore?
“He must’ve fell asleep during the Texans game,” claimed one fan.
“Bc he’s old asf and the age is showing 🗿,” explained another individual.
“Probably because he wa a terrible QB this season? As a fan of a rival, run that sh*t back though,” said a neutral fan.
Back to Green Bay circa 2010?
“Well they’re both too stubborn to change so it’s probably for the best since they want to do the same thing😂,” joked someone else.
How will Pittsburgh protect its quarterback?
“Unless you have a f*cking brick wall in front of Rodgers, do not bring him back. Please god no,” explained someone.
Steelers’ Owner on What Led Him to Hire Mike McCarthy
Over the weekend, Steelers president Art Rooney II explained what led him to hire Mike McCarthy as the new head coach. To him, it’s all about McCarthy’s track record and work with quarterbacks.
“He is someone who has a longer track record than many of the other candidates, a winning track record,” Steelers president Art Rooney II said on Sunday (via the team’s official site). “He’s been a winner everywhere he’s been. Probably just as important for our purposes, the quarterbacks that he’s worked with have all been very successful. So he has a proven track record of developing top flight quarterbacks. Those are the things that maybe stick out the most.”
The reality is that for all the regular-season success under Mike Tomlin, the Steelers didn’t have much postseason success beyond the Super Bowl XLIII victory. The team hadn’t won a postseason game since 2017. However, the same could be said about McCarthy’s time with the Green Bay Packers.
