After its sports teams struggled last season, Philadelphia may be looking for a new hero, and it seems many are banking on getting LeBron James for the 76ers. The legendary small forward is now a free agent following his departure from the LA Lakers, and several Philly sports personalities have been campaigning for him to get to the City of Brotherly Love, including Eagles running back Saquon Barkley.
Barkley, who is worth $30 million according to CelebrityNetWorth, spoke with reporters and was asked about LeBron James’ free agency. He had an honest answer.
“I think it’s one of the greatest sports towns in the world,” he said. “I know Josh Hart said the opposite, I saw that on Twitter, but I have to disagree with him. If you want to go out with a bang, I feel like a great spot would be in Philly, and bringing a championship to Philadelphia, you’d be remembered forever.”
The Sixers have been rebuilding after their disappointing exit from the playoffs last season, getting swept by the eventual champions, the New York Knicks. Their biggest move so far was trading away Paul George, two first-round picks, and two second-round picks for NBA All-Star and NBA Finals MVP Jalen Brown from the Boston Celtics. Along with former MVP Joel Embiid, this all-star lineup could be enough to entice LeBron to go to Philly.
For now, the King has not made his decision, as he remains a free agent and perhaps the biggest name in the NBA free agency market during the off-season. The 76ers last won the championship in 1983.
Analyst Believes Philadelphia 76ers Have Big Chance To Land LeBron James
The Sixers are currently considered one of the favorites to land the veteran forward, along with his two former teams, the Miami Heat and the Cleveland Cavaliers. The idea of LeBron finishing his career where it began, in Cleveland, is one of the most enticing scenarios right now. However, former Golden State Warriors exec Bob Myers believes that the Sixers also have a serious shot, as he stated in the “Game Over” podcast.
“If you’re talking about the Sixers, if he was here, I would say, ‘I honestly believe this is your best chance to win,'” Myers said. “What I would just say is, if it’s about winning, let’s talk about this team. Because you can win here, in Philadelphia. If you want to talk about other stuff: What’s this guy like, what’s that guy like — by the way, he knows players, a lot of them better than I do. Their games — this is a guy that probably watches more basketball than anybody understands.”
LeBron missed a lot of games due to injuries during his final season with the Lakers. At 41 years old, 42 in December, wherever he signs could be the team he retires with, and getting that fifth ring could mean he will be ending his career with a bang.
