The NFL Draft is almost upon us teams are jockeying to be in the best possible position to take advantage of the two-day event ahead of the new season.
The Philadelphia Eagles find themselves in a similar spot, with all the talk being around a possible exit for one of their main stars, AJ Brown. But with Brown’s future understandably in the news, another player’s name has been included who could end up having a major say in where the Eagles end up this season.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Jonathan Greenard is very much on the agenda for the Eagles, with General Manager Howie Roseman plotting to make a move on draft day, that could take a few by surprise.
Vikings linebacker Greenard has reportedly been checked on multiple times during the offseason by the Eagles, suggesting that a move might very well be in the offing.
But there is also reason to be cautious about a trade here. Schefter said Roseman’s plans never truly hinge on just one move, and he might have a backup plan involved to ensure the Eagles leave the draft in the best possible place.
With draft pick numbers 54, 68 and 98 on Day 2, this would most definitely be where to keep your eyes if you’re a Philadelphia Eagles fan. With the Vikings also keen on acquiring a premium Day 2 pick if they lose Greenard, a trade might be the best option for the two teams.
AJ Brown to the Patriots Very Likely
On the AJ Brown front, it seems like the Eagles are resigned to the fact that they are losing the wide receiver regardless of what happens on draft day, with the New England Patriots the most likely destination.
Schefter said in the same report that neither side has been willing to commit to the deal until after June 1, which is when Brown’s hefty $40M salary cap charge would get split between this and the next year.
While the Patriots are by far the runaway favorites to get AJ Brown, there is always a possibility that another team could emerge and try to pry him away between now and June 1.
Always an astute businessman, there is no doubt that GM Howie Roseman will do whatever is in his power to ensure that the Eagles get the best of the deal, especially when it comes to a player the caliber of someone like AJ Brown.
