Brandon Aiyuk is rebelling against the San Francisco 49ers, saying on social media that he won’t return to the team in 2026. The post came after the team voided his contract guarantees, following allegations that he skipped mandatory rehab sessions.
The wide receiver is challenging the team’s assertions, but he’s in limbo as he remains under contract with San Francisco and cannot join a new team.
The situation escalated this Tuesday morning, when he posted the following comments to Instagram:
“When the news finally came out that my guarantees were voided in November. The team continued to lie to the media/fan base acting as if that was not a decision that was made in July. Continually saying that I would be returning, despite that fact that I told them on numerous occasions that I would not be. With the severity of my injury and gurantees no longer on the table that was not an option,”
“we are 1 year from the date in which they made the decision to void my guarantees due to “missed rehab” yet they have the footage and the gps information that shows I reached markers I never hit even before injury. All before the required recovery time ordered by the surgeon.”
“I will not be reinstating with them nor ever doing any kind of business with them. I’m locked in and focused on my opportunity to return to the field this season!”
What happened to Brandon Aiyuk? A timeline of the dispute
Brandon Aiyuk received a $120 million extension in 2024, following an offseason holdover. That year, he got injured in Week 7 of the season, tearing his ACL, MCL, and meniscus.
It was during the rehab of this injury that he missed mandatory rehab and training sessions. By July 2025, the team had internally decided to void his guarantees, but the decision wasn’t made public until November. The player didn’t file a complaint with the NFLPA but cut communication with the team’s coaching staff and front office.
In December, the 49ers placed him on the Reserve Squad List, and Aiyuk has spent the time since trying to force the franchise to release him to no avail.
