Former NFL linebacker Darron Lee, who was the 20th overall pick in 2016, was arrested this week and charged with first-degree murder in Tennessee. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, as per ESPN, took Lee into custody on Thursday after deputies responded to a residence for a medical emergency involving CPR.
Upon arrival, first responders found a woman who was determined to be deceased, and preliminary findings quickly shifted the investigation toward a homicide. Lee also faces charges of tampering with evidence and is currently being held at Hamilton County prison. His next court date is on Wednesday.
The arrest follows a series of legal troubles and a professional career that struggled to maintain it’s early momentum. Lee spent three seasons with the Jets before moving to the Kansas City Chiefs, where he won a Super Bowl ring as an inactive.
After this, he had a brief stint with the Buffalo Bills in 2020. This latest incident is not his first brush with the law, as he was previously arrested in 2023 for domestic violence and assault.
Before his professional decline, Lee was a standout star at Ohio Star and was named the defensive MVP of the 2015 Sugar Bowl. The details of the current investigation remain limited, but the transition from a first round NFL talent to a murder suspect has shocked the sports community.
What Was the Domestic Violence Charges on Darron Lee in 2023?
In April 2023, Darron Lee was arrested in Ohio following a violent domestic dispute involving two women, including the mother of his son. According to police reports, Lee allegedly pushed one of the women against a wall and threw her to the floor.
He then struck her in the face and head eight to nine times with closed fists before grabbing her by the neck and lifting her up. During the investigation, authorities also learned of a separate 2022 incident where Lee allegedly threw a phone at a woman and punched a pillow next to her head.
The 2023 case eventually led to a plea deal in early 2025, where Lee pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of attempted assault and possession of a controlled substance. He was sentenced to one day in jail, one year of probation, and a small fine, which allowed him to avoid more serious felony convictions at the time.
This history of documented violence has now become a central part of the conversation following his recent first-degree murder charge in Tennessee.
