The Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback problems last season were well-documented, as they suffered injuries to their starter Daniel Jones and backups Anthony Richardson and Riley Leonard. The team went from being the top team in the NFL to being eliminated from playoff contention.
As the new season approaches, ESPN’s Adam Schefter provided an update on Jones, who suffered a torn right Achilles tendon.
“Colts quarterback Daniel Jones was cleared Monday to participate in 7-on-7 drills, marking yet another significant step in his comeback from a torn right Achilles tendon,” Schefter tweeted.
Colts head coach Shane Steichen hinted that he may increase Jones’ workload this week. The quarterback had already been participating in team activities during the offseason, including throwing drills.
“To get him out there in 7-on-7 was huge, to get him in the fold, running plays with the guys,” Steichen told reporters. “We’ll keep that trend going, probably through the end of OTAs and then, obviously, get him into team stuff at training camp. It’s spring, we don’t play for a while, so we’ve got to be smart with his injury. But he’s making great progress.”
Jones believes he will be back by Week 1, which will be on Sept. 13 against the Baltimore Ravens.
Daniel Jones Speaks About Returning To Practice While Still Injured
Daniel Jones practiced last week, though he did miss Monday’s session. However, he did talk to reporters when he was there.
“You just feel more a part of it, I think, prepping for practice and the meetings, being a part of the walkthroughs, kind of going through the plays, being back there with the quarterbacks talking through things,” he said. “It just feels more like you’re back in the swing of things and back a part of it. So, it’s been good this week to be back.”
Jones is expected to be the QB1 for this season, with Anthony Richardson and Riley Leonard currently competing to be the QB2.
