For a moment, it seemed that Brendan Sorsby was going to get another chance in college football. However, after much back and forth between the powers in control of his eligibility and continued uncertainty, Sorsby has decided that the NFL is the best move after all. With the quarterback heading to the professional league, one insider predicted the Browns would be interested in Sorsby.
However, the insider, Aaron Goldhammer, believed it to be the wrong move. That didn’t mean that he expected the Browns to decline to kick the tires. In a statement made in a video clip on ESPN Cleveland, Goldhammer cautioned the Browns against doing what most believe the team will do.
“There are organizations that have the luxury to try this, and in my opinion, the Cleveland Browns are the exact opposite of that,” he said. “Everybody assumes that the Browns are going to be in on Brendan Sorsby because it sounds like such a Browns thing to do. ‘Wait a minute. There’s a quarterback with an addiction problem who wants to get into the NFL. Who do we put him on? I know, let’s send him to Ohio.'”
Sorsby is expected to enter the NFL’s supplemental draft. In terms of production, Sorsby improved steadily in his career, finishing with a career-high 27 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also led the Big 12 in yards gained per pass completion. However, his gambling troubles will be the biggest obstacle to entering the league.
Narrowing Down Brendan Sorsby’s Landing Spots
Brendan Sorsby serves as a rare post-NFL draft significant addition opportunity. While the quarterback has created questions with the controversy, plenty of landing spots make sense for the quarterback in addition to the Cleveland Browns. Of course, with most teams already settled at quarterback, Sorsby’s only hope will be to join a team at the bottom of the depth chart and work his way up.
Luckily, there are teams with questions about the starter heading into the year. If things go sideways and Sorsby is waiting as the second-string quarterback, it could be his best opportunity.
The Dolphins, in the middle of a rebuild with the prayerful addition of Malik Willis, have little reason to put all of their eggs in one basket. If things go off the rails in the room, Sorsby could give fans a mid-season reason to tune in.
The Jets have nothing guaranteed with Geno Smith, who struggled in his original tenure with the team. If the Jets have been less than impressed by his production in practice, adding Sorsby could make plenty of sense.
If Sorsby falls through the cracks and is determined to have much less cache with teams where he will need to claw for any opportunity at all, the Bengals might consider him. Joe Burrow’s health has become a constant enough issue that adding a backup with untapped potential might make sense.
Sorsby would compete with Joe Flacco and Josh Johnson for the second or third backup spot. While Flacco has looked good in spots, the 41-year-old quarterback could catch a case of fatherhood at any time.
