With Kyler Murray set to become a free agent next week once the Arizona Cardinals officially release him once the new league year begins, one wild card team has interest in adding Murray to their team.
The Oakland Athletic’s drafted Murray ninth overall in the 2018 MLB Draft, but a year later, Murray elected to take his talents to the NFL.
A’s general manager David Frost was asked about the possibility of Murray having a spot on the A’s roster now that he’s set to become a free agent. He is open to the idea of Murray joining his ball club, but understands he will have multiple NFL opportunities on the table.
Frost told MLB.com on Wednesday:
“Kyler is an elite NFL quarterback and I’m sure there are plenty of opportunities for him to continue his football career. That said, he and his baseball representatives know that we’re always open to him exploring a return to baseball with the A’s if that time ever comes.”
Kyler Murray Had A Change Of Heart And Decided To Pursue A Career In Football
Kyler Murray is a special athlete. It’s not every year an athlete gets drafted in the first-round of one professional sport and then the first-round of another sport a year later. That happened with Murray in 2018 and 2019.
Murray played as an outfielder for Oklahoma’s college baseball team for the 2017 and 2018 seasons. Despite continuing to pursue a career in football, Murray was drafted in the first-round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Athletics and signed a $4.66 million signing bonus.
Prior to Murry’s junior football season at Oklahoma, he notified the team that he would report to spring training in 2019 to begin his baseball career. However, after winning the Heisman Trophy following the 2018 season, he would forego his senior year and enter the NFL Draft, becoming the first-overall pick by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2019 NFL Draft.
