The NFL world was left stunned on Monday as news about Eric Bieniemy‘s wife being hospitalized broke. The Kansas City offensive coordinator’s partner was shot on Sunday night at the couple’s home in Virginia.
While Mia Bieniemy is currently hospitalized, there have been no updates on her health from the police or any family members. However, Loudoun County Police did confirm to ESPN that a person with “multiple gunshot wounds” and “serious injuries” was being treated at a hospital, not disclosing their identity.
Leah Pau, a spokesperson for Loudoun County Police, told the media that police arrived at Bienemy’s residence on Northpark Drive in Ashburn, Virginia, at 7:32 PM last night.
UPDATE: Mia Bieniemy is now in stable condition, according to a report from ESPN reporter Nate Taylor.
Amid his wife’s hospitalization, Eric Bieniemy’s son Elijah was also arrested by Loudoun County police and charged with use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, malicious wounding, and discharging a firearm within a building.
Elijah is currently at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center, where he is being held without bond. According to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, Elijah was deemed no threat to the public.
Eric Bieniemy, who was fulfilling his duties with the Chiefs, was away from home in Missouri earlier in the day, preparing for the team’s return to practice. The Chiefs have not commented on the situation as of this writing.
Bieniemy Joined Chiefs After Brief Stint Away From Team
Eric Bieniemy was a major part of the Chiefs’ dynasty as the team’s playcaller, winning two Super Bowls in the process. However, he stepped away from the team after the 2023 season to join the Washington Commanders as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator.
However, after a 4-13 season, Bieniemy left Washington to take over the UCLA Bruins as associate head coach in 2024. The switch to college football didn’t pan out either, as the team finished with a 5-7 record.
After a fairly successful year with Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears, where the team narrowly missed out on an NFC championship berth, Bieniemy returned to his roots, where he had the most success of his career.
While the team is not the same as the one he left, with Patrick Mahomes recovering from an ACL injury and Travis Kelce’s decline, the Chiefs do have Xavier Worthy, who they can rely on as their primary outlet on offense.
