“We’re Not In The AFC Anymore”: John Harbaugh Takes Subtle Jab At Younger Brother Jim Harbaugh Ahead Of Giants Coaching Debut

Brothers John Harbaugh and Jim Harbaugh were in the same AFC conference until the 2025 season. But with John getting fired from the Baltimore Ravens and shortly afterwards joining the New York Giants as head coach, the two brothers can breathe a sigh of relief.

Jim, after winning the national championship for Michigan, joined the Los Angeles Chargers as the head coach. The Ravens (AFC North) and the Chargers (AFC West) are both part of the AFC. Therefore, they had to face each other often. But since the Giants are part of the NFC East, the encounter between the two will be minimal.

That’s what John was referring to in his Giants introductory press conference.

“Mom and Dad taught us to attack this day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind, right? We learned that, and that’s what we’re going to do every single day. Jim and Joni, hey, out there, Jim, we’re not in the AFC, Jim, you can breathe easy.”

Between the two Harbaughs, John Harbaugh has the edge. John has beaten Jim in every matchup so far. Among those games is a Thanksgiving night regular-season game in 2011 (Ravens over 49ers), Super Bowl XLVII in the 2012 season (Ravens beat 49ers 34-31) and a 2024 Monday Night Football game when John’s Ravens topped Jim’s Chargers 30-23.

John Harbaugh’s Vision as Giants Head Coach

John Harbaugh made the Ravens a successful franchise during his 18 seasons. He needs to do a similar job with the Giants, who have a young quarterback at the helm, Jaxson Dart. Despite the young team, Harbaugh has made it clear that he wants to win quickly and consistently rather than waiting for the rebuild to be complete. He wants the team to make the playoffs in 2026.

“I think the Giants roster is strong and it’s our job to make it stronger,” Harbaugh said. “We are going to compete for the playoffs and for championships. I expect and want to make the playoffs next year.”

The Giants are coming off a 4-13 season that saw Brian Daboll getting fired in November and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka becoming the interim head coach. It was only worse the year before as it was a 3-14 season. Thus, Harbaugh has quite the task at hand next year to make good on his promises.
