Why Did Deandre Ayton Get Detained at Bahamas Airport? What We Know About Lakers Center’s Latest Off-Court Situation

Deandre Ayton was reportedly detained at the Lynden Pindling International Airport in the Bahamas. The NBA All-Star weekend break is now over, and teams start preparing for the playoffs. The LA Lakers’ chances of making a deep postseason run rest a lot on how their centers perform from now on. While Ayton has a lot of expectations on the court, his recent off-court antics took the internet by surprise.

As per Reuters’ analyst, Jasper Williams-Ward, Ayton was questioned by the authorities at the Bahamas Airport, as he was suspected of having a small amount of marijuana. However, he was later released by the authorities and was allowed to travel to Los Angeles from his home in the Bahamas.

A few fans took this opportunity to criticize Ayton’s current form and his offensive slump after a good start with his new team. One fan said:

Not surprised, he plays like he’s high anyway”

The 2018 first overall pick has failed to develop any level of chemistry with his draft partner, Luka Doncic.

The Lakers’ next game against their city rivals, the LA Clippers, will be a litmus test of how the players have consolidated after a long break. While Ayton might be a little worried due to the airport situation, his focus will be on making his way back into the starting squad, which might not be easy.

Jaxson Hayes presents his case in the absence of Deandre Ayton

Deandre Ayton has been out of the rotation for the last four games after suffering a knee injury. The last time he took the court against the Brooklyn Nets, he scored seven points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Jaxson Hayes, whose inclusion in the starting squad has been debated for some time, has shown why he should be considered for the position.

Hayes has scored in double digits in the previous three games that he has started. In the Lakers’ last win over the Dallas Mavericks, the Oklahoma native scored 16 points, seven rebounds, four assists, three steals, and one block in 34 minutes.

JJ Redick might consider playing Ayton on a minutes restriction after he returns from the injury, and continue with Hayes until its benefitting the team. The Lakers will need to make a final push if they want to get locked in for the playoffs without any risk.
