The Detroit Pistons have now lost four back-to-back games for the first time this season. The top seed in the Eastern Conference has looked lacklustre the past week, leading to doubts in the minds of fans and analysts about the team’s playoff run. Paul Pierce and his crew also discussed the Pistons’ late slump before the postseason.
On the No Fouls Given podcast, the crew discussed the offensive slump the Pistons have suffered lately and tried finding answers to the situation. However, Pierce seemed convinced about the fate of the team in the playoffs. He said:
“For one, at the worst time of the year, you’re playing your worst basketball and you’re dealing with injuries, that’s concerning… I’m watching them, and this is not the team that if I didn’t know that they had the best record in the East that I’ll be looking at and say ‘Hey this is the favorite to come out of the East’ based on what I’ve seen.”
The 2008 NBA champion also stated that the Pistons’ superstar Cade Cunningham looked tired and overwhelmed with responsibilities. He went on to highlight the mental toughness it takes to survive the postseason and come out victorious from the conference.
Talking about the team’s chances in the playoffs, the 2008 Finals MVP predicted:
“I just don’t have faith in Detroit moving forward. Like I can see them losing in the second round.”
The second round in the East will be a battle of the best, with the Boston Celtics, the Pistons, and the New York Knicks potentially in the mix. Cunningham and Co. will have to gear up if they look to be the last one standing at the end of it.
With their current form, it will be difficult to contain the Celtics, who have just gotten back Jayson Tatum to the squad and are looking to make a deep postseason run.
The Detroit Pistons look to come out of disappointing run
The Pistons have lost four consecutive games. In the last one against the Miami Heat, only Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren were the starters who scored in double digits. It clearly depicts the lack of offensive help, even with scorers like Tobias Harris in the rotation.
Cunningham leads the franchise in points and assists, averaging 25.2-5.7-9.8 this season.
Duren has had his best season in the NBA so far, but that won’t be enough to get them past the giants like the Celtics and the Knicks.
With Ausar Thompson still out of the rotation due to an injury, the Pistons will now face the Brooklyn Nets, who are at the bottom of the table. This might be a good chance for them to get a win and end their losing streak.
